Part 3 of the beginner series: How to become independent from the power supply, stay warm in winter, and communicate even without internet.

In Part 1 you learned why to start preparedness and the first priorities. In Part 2 you built your water, food, and lighting supplies. Part 3 addresses the next layer: energy independence, winter heating, and communications alternatives.

These are the areas where unprepared households struggle most in extended crises.

Energy Independence: The Essentials

Complete energy independence (whole-home backup power) is expensive and complex. For beginners, focus on the essentials:

Phone and communication devices: A 20,000+ mAh USB power bank keeps smartphones charged for several days. This single purchase resolves the most acute energy problem for most people.

Small devices: A 12V car battery with inverter or a small power station (like Jackery, EcoFlow) can run LED lighting, a radio, and small devices for days.

What you don't need immediately: Whole-home generator, solar installation, industrial power bank. These are later investments if you decide to build deeper resilience.

Realistic beginner energy step: quality USB power bank (30 euros) + battery-powered radio (30 euros) + headlamp with fresh batteries (20 euros). Total: approximately 80 euros.

Heating Without Electricity

Central heating in Germany is typically gas or oil — but electrically controlled. A power failure can prevent a gas furnace from operating even if gas is available.

Immediate measure: Extra blankets and cold-weather sleeping bags. Layering clothing. Identifying the warmest room in the house (smallest interior room with fewest exterior walls).

One-room heating: A candle-powered lantern heater, a butane camping stove (ventilated!), or a wood-burning camping stove can heat a single small room adequately. This is enough to survive.

What to avoid: Any combustion device (gas stove, propane heater, charcoal) in an enclosed space without proper ventilation. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a documented emergency cause in power outages.

Communications: What Works When Phones Don't

Scenario: cell towers are overloaded or offline. Internet is down.

Battery-powered or hand-crank AM/FM radio: Emergency broadcasts use traditional radio. This is how official emergency information reaches people when digital infrastructure fails. This is the single most important communication purchase for preparedness.

Designated meeting points: If phones don't work, where does your family meet? This requires no technology — just a pre-agreed plan.

Physical written plans: Addresses, phone numbers, and important contacts on paper. When phones are dead, digital contact lists are inaccessible.

PMR radio (walkie-talkies): For local communication within a few kilometers. Useful for family coordination during evacuations or within communities.
