Pandemic Preparedness Checklist: What You Need Before the Next Outbreak

Complete pandemic preparedness checklist: medications, hygiene supplies, home isolation equipment, and communication plan for the next health crisis.

Pandemic Preparedness: The Complete Checklist

The COVID-19 pandemic showed: those who were prepared managed better. This checklist covers everything you need for a 4-week home isolation.

Section 1: Health and Medical Supplies

Basic Medications

  • Fever reducers: Ibuprofen 400 mg (50 tablets) AND Paracetamol 500 mg (50 tablets)
    • Note: Do not use only ibuprofen — some viral illnesses respond better to paracetamol
  • Antihistamines: Cetirizin or Loratadin (30 tablets) for allergic reactions
  • Nasal spray: Saline solution (2 bottles, no medicated spray — dependency risk)
  • Throat lozenges (2 packs)
  • Cough syrup — expectorant AND suppressant
  • Electrolyte sachets (20 packs) — for fever and vomiting/diarrhea
  • Prescription medications: 2-month supply on hand
    • Medication 1: _____________ Quantity: _______
    • Medication 2: _____________ Quantity: _______

Medical Equipment

  • Thermometer (digital, fever threshold alarm)
  • Pulse oximeter (measures oxygen saturation — critical for respiratory illnesses)
  • Blood pressure monitor (if relevant for household)
  • First aid kit complete and up to date

Protective Equipment

  • FFP2 masks: At least 50 pieces per person
  • Surgical masks: 100 pieces
  • Disposable gloves: 2 boxes (100 pieces each)
  • Safety goggles or face shield for caring for sick household members
  • Disposable aprons for care situations

Section 2: Hygiene and Disinfection

  • Hand disinfectant (70% ethanol): 2 liters
  • Surface disinfectant: 2 liters
  • Soap: 20 bars or 5 liters liquid soap
  • Paper towels: 20 rolls (for isolated use)
  • Garbage bags (heavy duty): 1 box for contaminated waste
  • Cleaning products: Standard disinfectant cleaners for bathroom and kitchen

Isolation Setup

  • Isolation room designated (for sick household member)
  • Sick room has its own:
    • Bathroom access OR designated toilet cleaning protocol
    • Towels and bed linen (dedicated set)
    • Trash can with lid

Section 3: Food and Water Supplies

For 4 weeks, per person:

Water

  • Drinking water: 56 liters (2 liters/person/day × 28 days) OR water filter + large reservoir

Calorie-Dense Non-Perishables

  • Whole grain rice: 5 kg
  • Pasta or other grains: 5 kg
  • Legumes (canned): 20 cans
  • Canned fish (tuna, sardines): 15 cans
  • Canned meat (chicken, beef): 15 cans
  • Canned vegetables: 20 cans
  • Canned fruit: 10 cans
  • Cooking oil: 2 liters
  • Salt, sugar, spices: sufficient quantities
  • Coffee and tea: personal preference supply
  • Comfort foods: chocolate, cookies, personal preferences

Vitamins and Supplements

  • Vitamin C: 90 tablets per person
  • Vitamin D3: 90 capsules per person (especially important in winter)
  • Zinc: 30 tablets per person (immune support)
  • Multivitamin: 30 tablets per person

Section 4: Communication and Information

  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio for official announcements
  • Emergency contacts on paper:
    • Family doctor: _______________
    • Nearest hospital: _______________
    • Poison control: _______________
    • Local health department: _______________
  • Emergency messaging app installed on phone (Signal, Telegram)
  • Household communication plan: who contacts whom when someone falls ill

Section 5: Mental Health and Well-Being

Long isolation is psychologically challenging. Prepare for this:

  • Books, puzzles, board games (not just screens)
  • Exercise equipment for indoor workouts (resistance bands, yoga mat)
  • Video call capability (tablet, laptop, reliable internet)
  • Creative materials (drawing, writing, hobby supplies)
  • Plan for maintaining daily routine during isolation

Section 6: Children and Pets

For Children

  • Age-appropriate medications dosed for children
  • Children's thermometer (rectal or ear)
  • Activities for extended time at home (books, games, art supplies)
  • School contact information for extended absences

For Pets

  • Pet food: 4-week supply
  • Pet medications: 2-month supply
  • Veterinary emergency contact number

Weekly Maintenance

  • Check medication expiration dates
  • Rotate food supplies (FIFO)
  • Verify mask supply is adequate
  • Test medical equipment (thermometer, pulse oximeter)

Pandemic preparedness means being ready before symptoms appear. Stockpiling after an outbreak starts leads to shortages and higher prices. Build this supply gradually — one section per month.
