How far does a full tank take you? What does a 20-liter reserve canister add in an evacuation? Concrete calculations for different vehicles and scenarios.
The Basic Calculation
A normal car with a 50-liter tank and consumption of 7 L/100km:
- Full tank = approx. 700 km range
- Half-full tank (the normal state for many drivers) = approx. 350 km
For an evacuation from the Ruhr area to Bavaria (approx. 400–500 km): a half-full tank could be tight, especially if detours are necessary.
What a Reserve Canister Actually Provides
A 20-liter reserve canister of gasoline or diesel:
- At 7 L/100km: +285 km
- At 10 L/100km (heavy vehicle, traffic jam, fully loaded): +200 km
In an evacuation traffic jam with frequent stop-and-go: fuel consumption increases by 30–50%. Plan accordingly.
Vehicle-Specific Considerations
Gasoline and diesel: Reserve canisters are easy to fill and store. Diesel is more stable than gasoline (less oxidation).
Electric vehicles: No canister possible. Range is range. In an evacuation crisis with overcrowded charging stations: problematic.
Plug-in hybrid: Combination of electric range and gasoline tank. Best crisis preparedness characteristics, as flexibility is maximum.
Storing Fuel: What Is Permitted
Privately permitted in Germany:
- Up to 200 liters of gasoline in approved containers (UN approval)
- Up to 200 liters of diesel (more stable than gasoline, storable for up to 1 year)
Important: Gasoline loses quality after 3–6 months (oxidation, varnish). Fuel stabilizer additives can extend storage life to 12–18 months.
Diesel is more stable and can be used after 12 months or more with proper storage.
Practical Recommendation
Minimum standard: Never let the tank drop below half. This is the simplest and cheapest crisis preparedness measure for car owners.
Extended: 20-liter UN reserve canister in the basement or garage. Rotate every 3–6 months (pour into vehicle, refill with fresh fuel).
For crisis-prone regions: Two 20-liter canisters (40 liters reserve = approx. 500 km additional range).
In a Crisis: When to Refuel?
At the first signs of a supply crisis, refuel immediately. Do not wait until the news reports gasoline shortages — by then, lines at gas stations will be hundreds of meters long.
The tank early indicator: as soon as you hear news about potential supply problems.
