Rainwater Collection and Purification: Affordable DIY Solution for Home

Rainwater is free, falls regularly, and is available everywhere. For emergency preparedness, a rainwater collection system can be the perfect complement to your stored water supply — provided you know how to purify it safely.

Why Rainwater for Emergency Preparedness?

In a crisis with disrupted water supply, you have three options: use your stored reserves, filter water from streams, or collect rainwater. Rainwater has a decisive advantage: it falls directly at your location without requiring transport.

Typical rainwater usage in Germany: 800-900 liters per square meter of roof area annually. A 50 m² roof can collect 40,000-45,000 liters per year — far more than a household needs even in an extended emergency.

Is Rainwater Safe to Drink?

Raw rainwater is NOT safe to drink directly. It collects pollutants during its fall through the atmosphere and picks up contaminants from your roof surface. However, it can be made safe through proper treatment.

Contaminants in rainwater:

• Dust and pollen
• Bird droppings and organic matter from roofs
• Heavy metals from older roof coatings
• Microbiological contamination (bacteria, viruses)

Required treatment for drinking: Filtration + Disinfection (at minimum)

Simple DIY Collection System

What You Need

Basic setup (collection and storage):

• Rain barrel or IBC tank (1,000 liters)
• Downpipe diverter (rain harvesting kit)
• Fine mesh filter (remove coarse particles)
• First-flush diverter (discards first 2-5 liters of each rain event — these are most contaminated)

Installation Steps

1. Find a downpipe from your roof
2. Install first-flush diverter (crucial — removes concentrated contamination from first rainfall)
3. Connect fine mesh filter
4. Run pipe to storage tank
5. Ensure tank has a sealed lid (mosquito protection, keeps clean)
6. Install tap at tank bottom

Making Collected Rainwater Safe to Drink

Method 1: Boiling (Free, Reliable)

• Bring to a rolling boil for 1 minute (at sea level) or 3 minutes (above 2,000m elevation)
• Let cool in a covered container
• Effective against: bacteria, viruses, parasites
• Does NOT remove: chemical contaminants, heavy metals

Method 2: Filtration + Chemical Treatment

1. Pre-filter through cloth to remove sediment
2. Filter through ceramic or hollow fiber filter (removes bacteria, parasites)
3. Treat with purification tablets (chlorine or iodine) for virus inactivation
4. Wait 30 minutes before drinking

Method 3: Solar Disinfection (SODIS)

Fill clear PET bottles with filtered rainwater. Place in direct sunlight for 6 hours (full sun) or 2 days (cloudy). UV radiation inactivates pathogens.

How Much Water Can You Collect?

Calculation: Roof area (m²) × Rainfall (mm) × 0.8 (efficiency factor) = Liters collected

Example for Berlin (average 580mm/year): 50 m² roof × 580mm × 0.8 = 23,200 liters/year = 64 liters/day average

Emergency planning: A person needs minimum 3-5 liters/day for drinking and cooking. A 50 m² roof can supply a 4-person household with drinking water indefinitely.

Legal Considerations

In Germany, rainwater collection is generally permitted for non-potable uses (garden, toilet flushing). Using rainwater as drinking water is technically possible but check with local authorities — some municipal codes have restrictions.
