Pet Emergency Preparedness Checklist: Dogs, Cats, and More

Complete checklist for pet emergency preparedness: food storage, medical supplies, evacuation items, and identification for all household animals.

How to Use This Checklist

Work through this checklist systematically. Print it or save it on your phone. Check off each item as you complete it. The goal: ensure your pets can survive a 2-week emergency alongside you.

Items are grouped by priority. Complete each section before moving to the next.

Section 1: Immediate Priority (Do This Week)

Identification

  • Every pet microchipped
  • Microchip registration is current (verify online — many registrations expire or have outdated contact info)
  • Collar on every pet with ID tag showing phone number
  • Recent clear photo of each pet (last 6 months)
  • Photo of YOU with each pet (proves ownership)
  • Photos stored both digitally (phone, cloud) and printed

Emergency Vet Information

  • Primary veterinarian contact saved in phone AND on paper
  • 24-hour emergency vet clinic identified and contact saved
  • Pet insurance information (if applicable) accessible

Minimum Emergency Kit

  • 3-day pet food supply stored
  • Extra pet water supply (3 days worth)
  • Carrier or crate for transport
  • Extra leash (beyond the one in regular use)
  • Copy of vaccination records

Section 2: High Priority (Complete This Month)

Extended Food and Water Storage

  • 2-week pet food supply stored and rotated (dry food preferred)
  • Canned/wet food as backup (especially for elderly/sick animals)
  • Special dietary food if pet has medical needs (larger buffer — harder to find in crisis)
  • Water sufficient for 2 weeks calculated and stored

Water calculation by pet:

  • Dogs: 60-100 ml per kg of body weight per day
  • Cats: 40-60 ml per kg per day
  • Example: 20 kg dog = 1.2-2 liters/day = 17-28 liters for 2 weeks

Medical Preparedness

  • 30-day emergency supply of any regular medications (discuss with vet)
  • Medications stored safely (temperature requirements noted)
  • Pet first aid kit assembled (see list below)
  • Vaccination records current and copied
  • Health records summarized for any conditions requiring ongoing management

Pet First Aid Kit Contents:

  • Wound bandages (size appropriate for your animal)
  • Non-stick wound pads
  • Adhesive bandage/vet wrap
  • Antiseptic spray safe for animals (e.g., Vetericyn)
  • Saline solution for wound/eye washing
  • Muzzle (dogs — even gentle ones may bite when injured)
  • Tick removal tool
  • Thermometer (digital with probe cover)
  • Disposable gloves
  • Small scissors with blunt ends
  • Tweezers
  • Emergency vet phone number on card inside kit

Evacuation Planning

  • Pet carrier/crate identified and tested (pet enters it willingly or with minimal stress)
  • Pet carrier labeled with pet name and your contact information
  • Two evacuation routes identified from home
  • Pet-friendly shelter or hotel identified along each route (phone number noted)
  • Friends/family outside region who could host you and pets confirmed

Section 3: Complete Within 3 Months

Behavioral and Comfort Preparation

  • Dog trained to enter and exit crate on command
  • Cat carrier training started (carrier left open as furniture — positive associations)
  • All pets comfortable with being handled (reduces stress during emergency care)
  • All pets comfortable in vehicle (reduces evacuation resistance)

Extended Supplies

  • Comfort items packed (favorite toy, familiar blanket for each pet)
  • 2-week litter supply for cats
  • Extended waste bag supply (30+ bags for dogs)
  • Grooming basics (brush, nail trimmer — hygiene matters in extended crises)
  • Flea/tick prevention for 2+ months stored
  • Calming aid if needed (Adaptil for dogs, Feliway for cats — discuss with vet)

Documentation

  • All pet documents organized in waterproof folder or bag:

    • Vaccination records
    • Health records
    • Microchip documentation
    • Photos
    • Vet contacts
    • Insurance information
  • Digital copies backed up in secure cloud storage

  • Documents included in overall family emergency document kit

Special Checklists by Pet Type

Dogs Only

  • Extra collar and ID tag
  • Muzzle (safety precaution under stress)
  • Prescription food (2-week supply if on special diet)
  • Joint/mobility aids if needed (senior dogs)
  • Puppy pads for emergency indoor bathroom needs

Cats Only

  • Hard-sided carrier (more secure than soft for extended use)
  • 2-week litter supply
  • Portable litter box for carrier
  • Scratch pad (stress reducer)
  • Window/door security checked (stressed cats escape through unusual spaces)

Small Animals (Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, etc.)

  • Secure travel cage separate from home habitat
  • 2-week hay supply
  • Temperature monitoring (these animals are very heat-sensitive)
  • Stress-reducing cover for cage during transport

Birds

  • Travel cage separate from home cage
  • 2-week seed/pellet supply
  • Heat source for cold weather travel
  • Cover for cage (reduces stress in dark/unfamiliar environments)

Monthly Review Items

Set a calendar reminder to check monthly:

  • Food supply not expired — rotate as needed
  • Water supply refreshed
  • Medications not expired
  • Batteries in flashlight and any electric items in pet kit

Annual Review Items

Once per year:

  • Microchip registration verified as current
  • Photos updated (pets' appearances change)
  • Vet contacts confirmed
  • Vaccination records updated
  • Emergency shelters and contacts re-verified

A complete pet emergency kit shouldn't cost more than €50-100 depending on what you already have. The time investment is 2-3 hours once set up, then 30 minutes per year to maintain. That's a small cost for the peace of mind — and the safety — it provides.
