Self Defense
Optional- Pepper SprayEssential
Pepper spray is legal in Germany and allows effective self-defence against attackers from a safe distance (up to 3 metres). It contains capsaicin, which temporarily incapacitates eyes and airways. Buy pepper spray with CE marking as an animal repellent (CS gas pepper spray is restricted in public spaces in Germany). Practice handling it outdoors to use it safely in an emergency. Note the expiry date — effectiveness decreases after 2-3 years.
- Personal AlarmEssential
A personal alarm emits a loud, penetrating sound (110-130 dB) that deters attackers while drawing attention to your situation. It is suitable for all family members — including children and older adults. The device works by simply pulling out a pin or pressing a button. Attach the alarm to a keychain or backpack for immediate access. Test it regularly outdoors to verify it is working correctly.
- Security LightingRecommended
Security lighting with motion sensors deters potential intruders and automatically illuminates your entrance or yard. In an emergency situation, a well-lit property signals that someone is present. Choose solar-powered exterior lights with a PIR sensor — these work even during a power outage. An illumination level of at least 1,000 lumens and a detection angle of 180 degrees is recommended. Mount the lights to cover entrances, pathways, and dark corners.
- Alarm SystemEssential
A home alarm system signals intruders with a loud alarm and immediately deters burglars in 90% of cases. For emergency preparedness, wireless systems that don't require grid power are most suitable. Door sensors, window detectors, and an exterior siren cover the most important entry points. Simple self-installed systems (e.g., from Yale or TP-Link Kasa) provide good protection without requiring professional installation. Inform trusted neighbours about the alarm system so they can respond if it triggers.
- Security DoorRecommended
A security door with a reinforced frame, multiple locking points, and RC2 certification makes a break-in significantly more difficult. In an emergency — especially during extended absences or when home alone — a solid door provides reassurance. Retrofitting is possible: security locks, crossbar sets, and reinforced strike plates significantly increase burglary resistance without replacing the door. Have installation done by a qualified locksmith.
- Security WindowRecommended
Security glazing or anti-intrusion film on windows substantially increases the time a burglar requires. Film can be applied to existing panes retroactively and is a cost-effective alternative to full window replacement. RC2-certified windows withstand an attack with basic tools for at least 3 minutes — enough time for an alarm to alert the police. Ground floor windows and cellar windows in particular are worth protecting.
In real emergency situations like power outages or natural disasters, the vast majority of people cooperate and help each other. At the same time, it is sensible to have some basic security precautions in place — not as a reaction to fear, but as part of thoughtful preparation.
The equipment in this category is designed to secure you and your home and to be able to quickly summon help in an emergency. It complements — and does not replace — practising de-escalation, getting to know your neighbours, and building mutual support structures.
